Continuing with finds from London record shopping, you get not one, but two covers of the same White Stripes song. The tune in question is “Seven Nation Army,” the lead track off the White Stripes’ 2002 album Elephant and the Stripes’ biggest hit. It’s been covered a number of times, both recorded and live versions.
The Dynamics are a France-based group with members from the U.K., the U.S. and France. Their 2007 debut album Version Excursions contains reggae versions of a number of songs, of older and more recent vintage. Among those songs is “Seven Nation Army.” They also released a 12″ single with a remix that has remix that’s part lounge and part R&B, switching into disco along the way. Those drums sound a little like Michael Jackson’s “Beat It” and a bit like the Gap Band’s “Party Train.” Anyway, it does to me.
In 2004, Nostalgia 77 did a hard-edge cover with all the punch of the original version (Alice Russell provides fiery vocals). They’ve got a new compilation that contains a Grant Phaboa remix that adds an element of… Guess what? Reggae.
A couple older Stripes covers tomorrow.

‘Twas not me, alas. Would that I had spent it in London, shopping for records. Or L.A. or New York or any other good shopping city.
