Yesterday, fitness guru Jack LaLanne passed away at the age of 96. He was noted not only for his early recognition of the importance of exercise and proper diet, but for the way he turned to mass media to spread the word.
His TV fitness program The Jack LaLanne Show debuted in 1951 on local TV in San Francisco and then went nationwide in 1959 as part of daytime television. I remember seeing him on TV as a kid and more than anything else, I recall his great enthusiasm for life (as seen in this clip).
I happen to own the exercise record he put out in 1959, in which he promotes fitness routines with the “Glamour Stretcher,” which was a resistance band device.
You can hear the three-part section dedicated to the hips. And the record is blue vinyl!
