Each year, I complete my holiday music offerings with a few songs for the new year. Invariably, these songs are accompanied by bittersweet recriminations, wistful longing and timid hopes for the coming year.
This year is no different.
I’ve said some version of this before, but here we go…
Time is an artificial construct.
Sure, the sun rises and sets. The globe spins ’round the sun. But not with the regularity that the clock and the calendar would suggest.
And yet, the year’s end is regarded as significant. That unit of time made up of 365 days is considered important. We mark the progress of our lives with these passing years.
On this day, we look back. we look forward. We express sorrow and regret. We hope and dream.
We move on to the new year and, hopefully, better things.
