This segment on The Rachel Maddow Show last night reminded me that I have written a number of times over the past decade on the Culture Wars that America periodically goes through. I thought it might be useful to link to some of these pieces.
I have posted a few times on the struggle of the Old Guard against rock ‘n’ roll in the Fifites and Sixties (Its own version of the larger Culture Wars that played out in those times):
- Booze and broads and blunts and bitches
- “I love rock and roll…”
- Mitch Miller: Enemy of Rock ‘n’ Roll
And similiar battles regarding jazz from 1922 and 1959:
And, to cap it off, here’s a glimpse of some of the writing on the Culture Wars I was doing on the pre-blog version of this website back in 2000.
Just to put a little high-minded gloss on this post, let me note that a lot of these battles seem to center on two things:
- 1) The Constant Theme of US versus THEM (a.k.a. The Threat of The Other). [We're the good guys. Those other people? I don't think we can trust them.]
- 2) It Was Always Better in the Olden Days [No, it wasn't.]
