My granddaughter Violet was visiting and I swear I didn’t pose her with my copy of Son of a Grifter. I had pulled it out, intending to re-read it and it’s natural she should browse through it.

Yes, it’s the True Crime genre, but it’s also better than that. The 2001 book is by Kent Walker; as the cover says: A Memoir by the Other Son. It’s about what it’s like to grow up as the offspring of a sociopath. Grifters and con artists seem somewhat glamorous (in a gritty sort of way), but this book is about a woman who seems compelled to lie and cheat every second of every day, inflating her importance and assuming the worst of others. Fascinating stuff.
