Okay, kids. ‘Tis the day before Christmas and we’ve had fun, right? Okay, I didn’t blog anywhere as near as I intended to this year. I never wrote that analysis of Synecdoche, New York (loved it) and I never wrote that comparison of rock songs that ape Broadway versus Broadway showtunes that ape rock. But I did manage to put in a somewhat abbreviated version of our annual holiday sing-a-long sensation.
We’ll close out with a couple o’ piping hot mash-ups, a favorite genre on this blog. They’re both soulful and funky and perfect for blasting out tomorrow morning as you unwrap your presents. Or go out for Chinese food and a movie instead.
First up is “Funky Christmas,” a tribute from L.A.’s Brat to the Godfather of Soul – Mr. Please, Please, Please – The Hardest Working man in Show Business… Mister James Brown ( who recorded a couple Christmas albums in the late Sixties and early Seventies).
Then, Berkeley, CA mash-up producer mojochronic stirs together a bunch of songs drawn from the soundtracks of blaxploitation films of the early Seventies, including Shaft, Superfly, and so on.
Enjoy!
