It’s Hannukah, Man!

It’s Hanukkah, O Hanukkah as well, when the Chosen People celebrate the Festival of Lights, so why shouldn’t they get some tunes?

Brave Combo is the Texas-based polka band that made a name for itself by covering rock songs in different styles. They also do rumba, cumbia, samba, merengue, and other styles. In the early Nineties, they were asked to do a Christmas album for the Japanese market; it was successful enough that it was also released in America, with the addition of a Hanukkah song. “Hanukkah, O Hanukkah” is based on the old Yiddish folk song “Y’mey Hanukkah,” and it’s the best-known Hanukkah song besides “Dreidel, Dreidel, Dreidel.” Brave Combo has a newer album that takes you through all the holidays of the year.

They Might Be Giants released the EP They Might Be Giants in Holidayland to collect a few holiday songs they had recorded over the years and they included “Feast of Lights,” which had appeared on the compilation Festival of Lights 2. Not much to say here, but it’s a great song.

One of things that made me fall in love with Brave Combo was their cha-cha rendition of “O Holy Night.” (I am somewhat ashamed to admit this.)
