“There ain’t no Sanity Claus!”

From the Scared of Santa gallerySo, back to business. It’s that time again, when I dip into my collection of holiday music. I refer you back to this post from 2005, which gives you a little historical context; then there was last year’s Xmasganza.

This year will be a little more low-key. That first year, I posted 44 songs in 27 days. Last year, it was half that number. This year, we’ll see what happens — no promises.

Anyway, here are two songs about the big guy. First up is Standstill from Tallahassee, FL, taking on a Christmas classic that I could never stand. “I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus” has always been a clunky song to me, even more than that damned “Little Drummer Boy.” Kip Addotta also did a version of this song where Daddy is doing the kissing, but in the end, Santa turns out to be Mom. In this version, Santa’s a guy — not that there’s anything wrong with that. I guess “Daddy” is bi rather than gay, because there’s a three-way, but whatever. The lyrics are sophomoric, but it’s a nice arrangement. I can’t find any signs that Standstill still exists, but it was Farzad Sharif (guitar), Kevin Allen (guitar), Justin Taylor (vocals), and Auggie Hansen (drums).

Holland’s The Waistcoats lend their Bomp List-style sound to an original number. The band is Jan Herman Veldkamp (guitar, lead vocals), Gerard Burger (keyboards, percussion, backing vocals), EJ Kloosterboer (bass), and Jack Outhuis (drums, percussion, backing vocals).
