As referenced earlier, there are reasons why this joint is called The Pop View. Chief among these is that I love pop culture — and by that, I don’t just mean I love movies, music and so on. I mean that I love little indie films and big dumb popcorn movies. Yeah, I love obscure bands, but it doesn’t mean that I don’t also adore some massive hit singles. I believe as Dan Le Sac says, “Thou shalt not stop liking a band just because they become popular.”
You’re not going to catch me posting a lot of Beatles’ tracks here, as much as I worship that band, and you don’t see Top 40 fare either. But I try to avoid hard-and-fast rules about what I will and won’t cover.
So, here we go…
I’ve been hypnotized by R. Kelly’s latest single “I’m a Flirt,” which is from his forthcoming album Double Up. It has a very simple, repetitive construction. Kelly does that sing-song delivery of his. In a little over five minutes, the phrase “I’m a flirt” is uttered at least 28 times. I could listen to it over and over.
Kelly’s an odd guy. He does these nasty hootchie songs and then turns around and writes uplifting hymns. “I’m a Flirt” is the ultimate ode to the playa; next week, he releases his tribute to the Virginia Tech victims. I read the cover story on Kelly in last month’s Vibe, not really having much of an opinion on the criminal charges he faces, and came up feeling a little queasy about the guy. At the very least, he seems to have a real problem about having appropriate relations with underage girls (I’m being kind here).
And yet… I could listen to “I’m a Flirt” all day long.
I’m also hooked on Robin Thicke’s “Lost Without U,” his big ol’ hit single. The lyrics are kind of sleazy, kind of cheesy, and utterly beside the point. Ditto for Justin Timberlake’s “My Love,” which provides all the evidence you’ll ever need for why producer Timbaland is a stone cold genius. Nay, a super genius. The rhythm track sounds like Timba smacked on the audio board with one hand to set the tempo and then spit some beats into the mic.
But I won’t post the album version of “My Love,” since I don’t want to lose all my street cred (Editorial Note: This is a little technique I employ from time to time that I like to call sarcasm…). So, instead, here’s Diplo’s remix, which is also pretty great, since it’s a mash-up with LCD Soundsystem’s song “Someone Great.”
