The jury is in

The state of radio today is pretty sad (see here). One bright spot in the landscape is Indie 103.1 in Los Angeles, which plays a truly alternative blend of rock music. And the best show on the station is Jonesy’s Jukebox, hosted by Steve Jones of seminal punk band the Sex Pistols.

In the past few months, Jonesy has started a new weekly feature called Jonesy’s Jukebox Jury which I have become completely hooked on. A panel listens to a new song without knowing who the artist is and then rates it “pants” (bad) or “mustard” (good). The panel is an interesting mix of music industry professional, actors, art dealers, musicians — even the head of the L.A. Galaxy, the soccer team. The banter is always lively. Sometimes you get an articulate analysis of what makes a song work and sometimes you get the “I know what I like” school of art appreciation.

There’s a blog about the show here. You can subscribe to the Indie podcast here and get the past seven episodes of the Jury. You can listen to the full version of the Jury live by clicking here to access Indie’s stream; the Jury airs Mondays at 11:00 a.m. (PT) [see comment below].

By the way, Jones employs a fair amount of Cockney rhyming slang in his speech. For example, as he goes to a commercial break, he refers to visiting the Duke. To pay the Duke of Kent means “rent,” so commercials pay the rent.

    Just got word:

Jonesy’s Jukebox Jury is moving starting THIS WEEK! The Jury will not be on Mondays. It will move to Fridays from 12 – 2PM. Listen in as our panel gives songs they hear the thumbs up (MUSTARD) or the thumbs down (PANTS). It’s all this Friday, April 20th at 12 bells.
