Feeling Manic

I like EPs. Sometimes it’s a great way for a band to start off, with a few really good songs, than a 70-minute album with a bunch of filler.

Manic is an LA-based band, featuring drummer Ryan Green, guitarist/keyboardist Zane Smythe, bassist Nate Perry, and vocalist/keyboardist Paul Gross. They recently released their debut record, the Floor Boards EP.

In their bio, the band discusses their sound:

“We are a fairly tech-heavy band,” says Smythe, shedding light on his band’s sound. “We use a lot of gear. Our bassist has a keyboard. Our drummer has a keyboard next to him. I have a keyboard. We have a laptop, guitar, and vocal effects, etc, so the music is on the technical side. We’re big fans of stuff that’s sparse but not thin. When we record, we throw everything into the pot and start reducing, and what’s left is what we play live. We’re fans of music that is thick…”

The EP also features Tony Hajjar (Sparta, At The Drive-In) on drums.

The first couple songs are the obvious singles and they’re okay. But the EP gets better as it goes along, with the next three songs being not very radio friendly, but very much pop epic. The last two songs have highs and lows, use piano and minor chords effectively, and remind me a lot of Soulwax and Blinker the Star. I’m totally diggin’ ‘em.

Their last EP, “Another New Home” is even better and the LP they recorded on their own after the label went under is great. I can’t believe they’re just fading away.
