Kevin & Bean Kristmas: Getting Your Gift

Jack Skellington in Disneyland's The Haunted Mansion[This is part of The John M. Higgins Memorial Xmasganza.]

Continuing on yesterday’s post, here another pair of selections from the Kevin & Bean Christmas series.

In 1998, the compilation was charmingly titled Santa’s Swingin’ Sack, complete with an almost obscene image of Jolly Old St. Nick on the cover. It contains one of my all-time fave Christmas originals “Christmas Crush” by Home Grown. I actually discovered the song the year before on the Rodney on the ROQ collection Santa’s Got A GTO! (highly recommended).

It’s an extremely well-written song. It starts with a male voice singing a female point-of-view. You then discover the singer is reading his girlfriend’s diary. The narrative begins and he is determined to play a (somewhat sleazy) prank by dressing up and going to her house to fulfill her dream of romantic relations with Santa. Much to his dismay, he is beaten out. What’s interesting, is that she seems truly smitten with Nicholas and you sense she is quite fulfilled by the experience.

From 2003’s collection, Christmastime in the 909, here’s My Chemical Romance with a cover of Mariah Carey’s “All I Want For Christmas Is You.” Thanks to this cover and the song’s appearance that same year in Love Actually, I really grew to love the tune. Okay, it’s Mariah. But sometimes Mariah can be good, as I said a year ago. (The 909 in the title is a reference to the Inland Empire, where I hail from originally.)
