[This is part of The John M. Higgins Memorial Xmasganza.]
Moving into the final stages of our holiday madness…
One of the things John and I collected were the annual Kevin & Bean Christmas CDs. They’re the morning team at the radio station KROQ in Los Angeles, where they’ve been since 1989 (the same year I moved away from So Cal). Every year, they put out a budget-priced CD (they used to be on vinyl and cassettes) for charity. My brother Dave would buy copies for John and me, because you can only buy them in L.A. (although you can find them for ridiculous prices on eBay).
Back in the early Eighties, KROQ was very cutting edge. Its quality faded over the decade. As near as I can tell, they’re now no better than most “alternative” stations across the country, playing Creed or AFI or Snow Patrol or whatever the hell it is they play these days.
Anyway, the Kevin & Bean CDs feature songs from acts such as Weezer and Beck, plus comedy segments. Since Friday night marked the beginning of Hanukkah, here are a couple timely tracks.
From 1995, right after his syndicated show was cancelled and four years before he began hosting The Daily Show, here’s Jon Stewart with a message from a Jew. More recently, Jon and Stephen Colbert recently discussed the war on Chanukah.
Then, from 2001, Pudie Tadow (apparently Incubus in disguise) exhorts the masses to get their dreidel on. Yes, the dreidel, with its legs so short and thin, drops to the ground so that you may win, much like a child whose aged parent has just collapsed on the floor of their condo in Miami.
