suddenly, tammy! had the guitar-less rock trio format before Ben Folds Five. BFF had more commercial success, but if you think about it, they weren’t any more productive. ST put out a couple EPs and two albums (their third album, Comet, was recorded but never released). BFF put out three albums and the Naked Baby Photos collection. So, that’s kind of a tie.
suddenly, tammy! did release the promo EP Shut Up, It’s Christmas in ’95, which includes “Plant the Halls,” which is “Deck the Halls” set to the tune of “Plant Me,” from ST’s self-titled debut, and “Rock ‘n’ Roll Santa Claus,” featuring quotes from Christmas movies and TV shows.
ST hailed from Lancaster, PA, and if we move a little further up the East Coast, we run into NY’s 5 Chinese Brothers. That’s not five brothers from China, but the band of that name. You know what I mean.
Their fine 1997 album A Window Shopper’s Christmas has a lot of great holiday originals. I’m partial to “And to All a Good Night,” a tribute to the healing power of Christmas specials. But Higgins used this great song about fruitcakes on one of his mix CDs, so that’s what I’m going with.
