[This is part of The John M. Higgins Memorial Xmasganza.]
My entire musical aesthetic is built on three legs: 1) punk/post-punk, 2) hip-hop and 3) R&B/soul/funk. For John, his foundation was punk music. We never really discussed his early days of music fandom, but in all the time I’ve known him, his tastes ran harder than mine. He also had a wonderfully profane sense of humor. These elements come together in today’s Christmas selections, the beginnings of this year’s tunes.
You get The Dickies, one of L.A.’s original punk bands, who (amongst other achievements) were one of the first bands to appear on mainstream television, thanks to their 1978 appearance on the Don Rickles sit-com CPO Sharkey. From that same year, here is the single “Silent Night,” which reached #47 on the UK charts (featuring a great bassline from Billy Club). And straight out of Vancouver, here’s a cut from Nineties ska-punk band DDT. This song, “Captain Morgan’s Christmas,” made one of John’s mix CDs, so you long-time fans might recognize it.
