Power, passion, peeking

The last couple posts have taken us in Eighties territory, which led me to dip into my extensive collection of 12″ records from that period. Boy, do I love a remix.

First up is Midnight Oil with a remix of their first big hit “Power and the Passion,” taken from their 1982 album 10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1. The 12″ is remixed by Francois Kevorkian and Dominic Maita. Actually, the version I’m posting is my own edit of the extended and the dub versions hacked together.

Next, we have Siouxsie and the Banshees with “Peek-A-Boo,” the first single from their 1988 album Peepshow. The foundation of the song has an interesting sound, because the music was played backwards and then the audio reversed. The track was remixed by “Roland (B.B.) Deth,” a.k.a. record producer Mike Hedges, who also produced and engineered the original album.

Both of these songs feature prominent percussion and have spare arrangements in places, which connected them in my mind.

    I didn’t say I remixed the song. I said I edited together two different mixes. The first three minutes is the dub version, actually called “Glitch Baby Glitch” on the single. The remainder is from the extended version.

    Thanks for the songs – I have the Siouxsie one on vinyl and enjoyed it a lot back in the day.
