From the shadows

Dark Shadows soundtrack albumHalloween rapidly approaches. A fine time to take a walk on the dark side.

Dark Shadows (1966-71) was a great TV show for its time. It was a soap opera, with all the standard trappings, but it was about werewolves, vampires, reincarnation, time travel, and so on. Its producer, Dan Curtis, died earlier this year and I paid tribute to him for his work in bringing horror to television. Here’s a cut from the soundtrack.

Combustible Edison was perhaps the best known of all the lounge bands of the Nineties. Their 1994 debut album I, Swinger includes a song inspired by the cult classic Carnival of Souls (1962). I had heard of this film for decades before I saw it. It’s great — both a B-movie shot for $33,000 in three weeks and a brooding existential portrayal of life and death. It clearly was an influence on George Romero’s Night of the Living Dead.
