What’s to say about Corinne Bailey Rae?
She’s from Leeds, England, up in Yorkshire. She sang hymns in church. She had a teenage love of Led Zeppelin. At 15, she started the band Helen, in the mold of Veruca Salt and L7. The band fell apart. While at Leeds University, she started singing in a local jazz club. She says her self-titled debut album (released eight months ago) is informed as much by Massive Attack as Jill Scott.
I selected a couple songs with a bit of grit to them. Some of the tracks remind me more of the feyness of Norah Jones and Nelly Furtado; these ones are a little more soulful and funky.
