A Closer Walk With Jamelia

JameliaI first heard of British R&B singer Jamelia from her hit 2004 single “See It In a Boy’s Eyes,” co-written by Coldplay’s Chris Martin, who also provided backing vocals. She actually made her debut in 1999; her third album Walk with Me was just released.

She’s only 25 years old, but she’s had six Top 10 hits in the U.K. and she’s a mother of two. On her new album she shows a confidence and range that’s very fetching. She also has two songs based on New Wave samples: the second single will be “Beware of the Dog,” featuring a sample from Depeche Mode’s “Personal Jesus,” and “No More” samples “Golden Brown” by The Stranglers. Will the kids know the originals? Plus, “Do Me Right” features Afrika Bambaataa and an Indian groove.

Xtina and Beyoncé have taken their shots. Here’s the Brit version.

(By the way, for those interested in scandal, Jamelia is almost a “Footballer’s Wife,” as she has been going out with Millwall’s Darren Byfield. In recent days, it has hit the British press that he’s been cheating on her. Fortunately, she’s already recorded the kiss-off song on her new album: “Get Up, Get Out.”)

(And that’s British rapper Sway playing the Jay-Z role on “Hustle.”)
