On Thursday night, I got to attend a private performance by Barenaked Ladies in New York. They were playing in a small studio at Music Choice. It was a very intimate experience, as the room was about the size of a 3-car garage with really high ceilings.
They played a set about 30-40 minutes in length, consisting entirely of songs from their new album Barenaked Ladies Are Me, then finishing with their 1998 hit “One Week.” I really liked the new material, which sounded stronger in a live acoustic setting than it does on the new album. The new tour starts in October and Mike Doughty will be opening for them.
I took a bunch of pictures, which are presented here for your enjoyment.
As you can see, there is a huge bank of lights in the back. Drummer Tyler Stewart was dying under the heat, complaining that he was being cooked alive. Finally, someone stepped in and unscrewed the three bulbs right behind him to provide relief.
Of course, that’s Jim Creeggan on bass, Kevin Hearn on keyboards, Steven Page and Ed Robertson on guitars and lead vocals.
