Mash-ups in the news

For all you mash-up fans (you know who you are), here are two examples of mash-ups in the news.

Via Poplicks, here is a report on the ABC Evening News on mash-ups. I must take exception with one point made in the report. As is made clear in this previous post, mash-ups go back to 2001 (although the practice of such edits of pop songs goes back decades), long before Danger Mouse’s The Grey Album (2004).

Today’s WaPo, in The Singles File column, highlights a mash-up from dj BC. Actually, the track they highlight is part of a whole album, entitled Wu Orleans, which mashes Wu-Tang vocals with New Orleans music. Given the anniversary of Katrina, this is a timely work; it can be downloaded here.

The first mash-ups I heard were on this 2002 illicit record: “The Best Bootlegs In The World Ever.”

Obviously, no one remembers a recording in the 60′s that mashes “Norwegian Wood” with the “Theme from Mission Impossible” by Alan Copeland. It even won a Grammy!
