Lily AllenContinuing with new music…

Remember Arctic Monkeys? (I posted about them here and here.) They were a sensation due to their MySpace page (See note in the comments as to the validity of this statement). Here comes the next MySpace superstar: Lily Allen.

Now that would probably be the best reason for me to blow her off, except for a few things that endear her to me.

  • She’s cheeky as hell, with an attitude perfect for a proper pop star (read this profile).
  • She takes grime and gives it a pop sheen, combining the best bits of Lady Sovereign and Norah Jones (or maybe it’s Alicia Keys and Nellie McKay).
  • The B-side of her debut single is a song based on a hook from Professor Longhair (“Big Chief”), over which she raps about how to blow off a bloke who hits on you at a bar.
  • Do you really need another reason?

Here’s that song, “Knock ‘em Out.” Unless something catchier comes along, this is the mad joint of the summer.

    Sample lyric:

    Come on, come now
    You can’t walk away
    Try desperately to think
Of the politest thing to say
    Just get out my face
    Just leave me alone
And, no, you can’t have my number
    ‘Cause I lost my phone

Oh, yeah, actually, I’m, um, pregnant. I’m havin’ a baby in like six months. And, uh, yeah, yeah.

Plus, here’s an even sweeter tune, showing her chanteuse side.

Her father is comedian/actor is Keith Allen, who’s not as well known outside the UK, but you might have seen one of his film roles.

Here’s hoping she doesn’t blow up on her way to the top.

Oh! And she’s done two mixtapes. Get ‘em while you can: Her First Mixtape and Her Second One.

Thanks for the second Lily allen mixtape! I hadn’t heard about that yet. I’ve been scouring the web for her demos for a while now, so you made my day.

    2. Hello Says:

Although this isn’t a major part of your current piece, the Arctic Monkeys didn’t get big off the back of MySpace at all. In fact, by the time that MySpace was created (August 2005), they were already well on the way to stardom and by then even the NME had caught on. They had a kind fellow called “the sheriff” to thank who uploaded their demo tracks onto his website and literally thousands of people downloaded it from there and then spread the demos themselves via messageboards.

You’re right with Lily Allen though and you might want to check out the popjustice article that gives more reason to love her.

    3. The Pop View Says:

      What, this article?

And here’s an article that takes a critical look the notion of acts being broken strictly through the web.

Yes, there is an Arctic Monkeys page on MySpace, set up last August. But as the disclaimer makes clear, it is a fan site, unconnected to the band or management.

According to Johnny Bradshaw, the Monkeys’ product manager at Domino, the band didn’t even know what MySpace was until three months ago.

“There’s so much confusion about how the Arctic Monkeys got their music out there in the first place,” he says. “They handed out 50 CD-Rs at the early shows to a small group of fans. As the fans started file sharing them, that’s how it spread over the internet. It was word of mouth.”

The MySpace connection is, he says, media-derived. “Nobody can genuinely get their heads round it when a phenomenon [like the Arctic Monkeys] happens every 10 years, so people try and over-analyse it and find more erudite reasons as to why this thing happened.

“The media need to make the populace join the dots and this is a very easy way of doing that – so people think that MySpace and Arctic Monkeys makes sense, even though it’s not true. This music simply connected with the masses. That’s it.”

    4. ^ Says:

That is indeed the Popjustice article.

I think the Guardian article confirms what I said, stating the MySpace connection is false and agrees with what you’ve said about MySpace helping build Lily Allen a large fanbase (albeit after signing a record label). Everybody wins.

    5. The Pop View Says:

Yes, that was the point of posting the article, to confirm what you said.

Everybody does indeed win here at The Pop View.

    6. will Says:

I love Lily – she has earned her way into my summer soundtrack regardless of where the monkeys got their recognition or where hers is coming from!

I love the centipede and other arcade sounds on the new mixtape.

    7. philippe Says:

i’ve been listening to her demo tape for the last couple of months
really the best thing i heard this year
and then today, i listen to her début album
and i ‘m kinda disapointed ( no i’m not trying to play the snobish fucker)
but her new songs are not that great, especially the 1 st one (terrible)
      the production is kinda awfull
it lost what i loved in it, the refreshing low key/roots sound that made it very special
now it sounds a bit mellow and radio oriented
      really strange
