“Hear the notes from a distant song…”

Steve Strange of VisageI’m diggin’ the new Nouvelle Vague album so much that I thought I’d give you another dose.

Do you remember the New Romantic movement? Were you even alive back then?

Early Eighties England. Bands like Adam & the Ants, The Fixx and Spandau Ballet. Influenced by the look and sound of David Bowie and Roxy Music. Poncy-looking clothes and electropop.

As evidenced by Visage. The band was made up of Steve Strange, Midge Ure, Billy Currie, Dave Formula, John McGeoch, and Rusty Egan — all former members of bands such as Magazine, the Rich Kids and Moors Murderers. “Fade to Grey” was their classic single.

Given the French vocals in the original, it’s fitting that Nouvelle Vague give the song a French vibe. I’m fuzzy on how you would characterize this sound. Chanson? Bal-musette? You tell me.
