Radiohead Covers: The best thing that you ever had

Another edition of Cover That Radiohead Song! Today: Singer-Songwriter Edition.

Jamie Cullum is another of those kids operating in the Classic Crooner school (e.g. Michael Bublé or Harry Connick, Jr.), a young turk standing in the massive shadow of Sinatra. A mere lad of 26, Cullum not only covers the usual jazz standards, but also songs written by him and his elder brother, Ben. On his third album, Twentysomething (2003), Cullum had success with two cover versions of contemporary pop songs. One was “Frontin’,” which I posted about previously here; the other was Radiohead’s “High and Dry”.

Ari Hest has been plugging away for a couple years. The New York singer-songwriter operates in the style of John Mayer, Jason Mraz and Jack Johnson, but without the high profile. He recorded and issued his first three albums on his own, selling copies at live shows. He finally got a deal with Columbia Records and had his first major label release in 2004. There are a ton of live recordings of Hest (such as here) and he is prone to performing cover songs, such as “No Surprises.”
