I’ve always thought it was kind of cool the way Terry Teachout refers to the “Teachout Museum,” which is what he calls his personal collection of art. This is a potentially pretentious sort of reference, but he makes it work.
This past weekend, I was shopping in an antique store and I saw this painting. It appears to be a poster, painted on black matte board. I was captivated.
I walked away. I came back to it, drawn by the siren song of something seriously weird.
Nobody at the store could tell me anything about it. I think it’s probably a real promotional poster and not somebody’s idea of a joke.
Really, I think it’s beautiful, in the same way I sincerely love Plan Nine From Outer Space for what it is, and not as some sort of hipster joke.
So I bought it.
If you know anything about the Beattie Bros. or Cole Forker or Clown Boy Bombo, please let me know. (And who is the mysterious Hank?)
