“Round baby, fat and gettin down…”

Now we head into the final week of Christmas tunes here. On Christmas Day, I’ll be switching over to Hanukkah songs (a.k.a. Chanukah, Hannukah, Hanukah, Chanuka, Chanukkah, Hanuka, Channukah, Hanukka, Hanaka, Haneka, Hanika and Khanukkah — so don’t worry, you can’t spell it wrong).

First up, a holiday plea from The Queen of Avenue A, Princess Superstar. Ms. Concetta Kirshner is a nice Italian/Jewish girl from the suburbs of Philadelphia, who moved to Manhattan and has been slinging rhymes for more than a decade now. Here’s a track from her third album Last of the Great 20th Century Composers (2000). The cut “I Hope I Sell a Lot of Records at Christmas Time” features production work from Prince Paul, making this a royal match.

Last year, famed director John Waters released a collection of Christmas songs and the highlight was “Fat Daddy (Is Santa Claus),” by Baltimore DJ Paul “Fat Daddy” Johnson. Fans of Hairspray, the movie and the stage musical, probably know that “The Corny Collins Show” is based on The Buddy Deane Show, an actual local TV show from the late Fifties and early Sixties. Once a month, The Buddy Deane Show would have “Negro Day,” and Fat Daddy was the host, with only black kids on the show. This record was a local hit in Baltimore and Waters has performed a real service by rescuing it. You can hear him discuss his Christmas album, and the holiday in general, on Fresh Air; he discusses the Fat Daddy record for the first four minutes of the interview.
