Tomorrow is Thanksgiving Day. Or today, if you’re avoiding your family by sneaking onto the computer. Or yesterday, if you didn’t.
For my international readers, this is an American holiday, where we give thanks for our blessings and pay tribute to the Native Americans (i.e., the Indians) who helped out the Pilgrims. Indians, I must imagine, give thanks for the smallpox, the forced death marches and the casinos.
Thanksgiving marks the official beginning of the Christmas Season. And this brings me to my point.
For more than 20 years now, I’ve been collecting holiday music, mostly Christmas songs. One of the reasons I restarted this site as a blog was to have a huge outlet for my collection. For about five minutes, late in 2004, I thought I might get it up in time for Xmas, but it took me until July of this year to get started. As you might imagine, I am raring to go.
I do not claim to have the largest collection of holiday music. Or anywhere near the best. But I am the motherfucker with the website and the will to dominate. My plan is to totally kick ass on posting Christmas MP3s right here. In addition, Hanukkah begins at sundown on December 25, so we’ll be doing something for the Chosen People too.
To kick things off, we’re going with two Thanksgiving songs, as sort of an apéritif. First, kind of a joke song from Cape Cod band the Incredible Casuals as they celebrate “Thanksgiving in Stoughton” (That’s Stoughton, MA). You can see Thanksgiving 2004 in Stoughton from this college student’s photo album, complete with the big football game.
Then, The Happiest Guys in the World salute “The International Holiday of Thanksgiving.” The band consists of brothers Tarquin and Peter Katis (also of the Zambonis and the Philistines Jr. ) and Leon Dewan (from Darien). The Tarquin Studios are located in Bridgeport, CT and the guys seem active in the New York scene.
Enjoy your turkey and whatnot, and we’ll get this music thing started soon.
