“The best in this kind are but shadows…”

DJ Shadow is like a God to me.

(Wait, that sounds terribly hyperbolic.)

DJ Shadow’s debut album Endtroducing is my favorite rock album. It is my favorite jazz album. It is my favorite hip-hop album.

(Let’s try this again.)

DJ Shadow is one of my favorite musicians. I regard him as a musician, even though he’s a DJ and works exclusively with sampled sounds. He has elevated turntablism to its greatest heights. I would hesitate to say he’s the best, since he’s probably not. But he is the standard bearer. He’s the guy who keeps the game elevated.

Brian Udelhofen is a 25-year-old Geographic Information Sciences technician, currently living in Minneapolis. On the side, he teaches percussion at Minnetonka High School in Minnetonka, Minnesota. As explained on his website, Udelhofen arranged two tracks off Endtroducing for a live performance group: “Building Steam with a Grain of Salt” and “Changeling.” The songs were performed by the Minnetonka High School Percussion Ensemble last May and a video is available.

To get a sense of how amazing this is, I am posting the original version of “Steam,” just in case you don’t know it. The video of the Minnetonka performace is quite large, so for a quick comparison, you can see the first minute here.

As a bonus, I’m also including a live recording of Shadow, playing “Midnight In A Perfect World.” I believe this is from a November ‘97 appearance on BBC Radio 1.

More to come…

As with pretty much all of our audio files, they are posted on a temporary basis for your evaluation. They will be removed after an appropriate period of time. You are encouraged to purchase these artists’ CDs.

But… since this was a live track, and you were kinda nice about it, I’m putting it back up.

[...] I’ve been pretty ridiculously clear about my devotion to DJ Shadow. (Missed it? See here or here, for example.) I also like Cut Chemist and love his track “Swing Set” off Jurassic 5’s Quality Control album (He also performed with the band Ozomatli). [...]
