Summer’s over. It’s 87 degrees outside as I write this, but summer is over. One of my favorite summer tracks has been an unlikely mix of Hasidic reggae and a band I love to hate.
Matisyahu, the Hasid from Crown Heights who combines hip-hop elements with roots reggae, was mashed-up with some classic Rolling Stones for a remix of the track “Chop ‘Em Down” that became “Miss You Mash.” (Hear a sample of the original song here. Read an interview with Matisyahu here.)
Okay, I’ve slandered the Stones in passing, so I ought to explain. One of those dual dynamics that exist is Stones vs. Beatles people. I’m a Beatles person. Always have been; always will be. They are opposing aesthetics.
I love that early Stones material, but I think they very quickly became parodies of themselves and they been trying to keep the flickering flame of their supposed reputation as The World’s Greatest Rock & Roll Band going for way too long. Twenty-five years after their debut album, U2 still seem fairly relevant. Twenty-five years after their debut album, the Stones released Steel Wheels.
Which reminds me… One of my favorite songs from last summer was Modest Mouse‘s “Float On.” That track was mashed up by emynd with “Friday Night” from Young Gunz, the results of which can be heard here.
