Nina Simone was born Eunice Kathleen Waymon in Tryon City, North Carolina. She began playing the piano at the age 4 and had classical training, studying at Juilliard for one year. She applied to the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia, but was rejected, supposedly due to racism. She built her rep performing in nightclubs in Philadelphia and Atlantic City. The song “Trouble In Mind” was written in 1927 by Richard Jones for blues singer Berta “Chippie” Hill.
