I just watched the last part of Stanley Kubrick‘s The Shining on TV last weekend. Therefore, I was totally prepped to appreciate the magnificence of this new trailer. The Shining as a heartwarming family comedy, from Touchstone Pictures, I’m guessing. UPDATE: The story behind the trailer.
Heavens to megatroid…
Speaking of Shadow, as we have this week, Diplo of Hollertronix did a great 42-minute mix last year which uses a number of songs from DJ Shadow along with anything else he could think of. Diplo has described this as being one of his “artsy-fartsy” mixes. The dude likes him some Southern hip-hop, whether it’s [...]
tick, tick, BOOM
It is with a sad and heavy heart that I must report the demise of boomselection. Its passing was announced today on the website of the same name. It started back in November of 2001. At that time, I first heard of mash-ups, the practice of taking the vocals of one song and putting them [...]
The story behind Sookie’s new cake.
SOOKIEI got the idea in a dream. I was back in cooking school and late for my final and I run over to an oven and sitting there is the ‘Smores wedding cake and I present it to my teacher and he starts weeping and the whole class is applauding and cheering. LORELAISo nice. SOOKIEAnd [...]
“The best in this kind are but shadows…”
DJ Shadow is like a God to me. (Wait, that sounds terribly hyperbolic.) DJ Shadow’s debut album Endtroducing is my favorite rock album. It is my favorite jazz album. It is my favorite hip-hop album. (Let’s try this again.) DJ Shadow is one of my favorite musicians. I regard him as a musician, even though [...]
The White Shadow
Holy crap. This is amazing and — I can assure you — will be investigated further when I have time. A high school band plays two tracks off of DJ Shadow‘s Endtroducing album (via Witz.org). The two songs are “Building Steam with a Grain of Salt” and “Changeling for Percussion Quintet.” The performances are from [...]
The soundtrack of your life. If you suck.
So, this weekend I went to see Just Like Heaven. And it was cute! The final scene is a little mushy — by which I don’t mean overly sentimental, but rather limp and flaccid — but it doesn’t hurt the movie, because we all know it’s coming. Reese Witherspoon is fine, but the heart of [...]
“…a cheap serenade so pure.”
Today, we say a few sad words about the ones who never made it. As I’ve said before about One-Hit Wonders, “You know how many artists never even come up with one good song?” As I figure it, once you’ve done “Louie, Louie,” you’re off the hook; you’ve already achieved more magnificence than most of [...]
“A bottle and my friends and me, New Orleans, I’ll be there…”
I shouldn’t keep harping on N.O., especially with Monster Rita scheduled to hit Galveston on Saturday, but I can’t help it. Efforts are underway to help displaced musicians from New Orleans, in places such as San Francisco, Arizona, Memphis, and Houston. Today, I’m featuring two bands, each with their share of brass. New Orleans has [...]
Fairness and Accuracy
Now, here’s an interesting thing. Both the New York Times and the Washington Post quote a line from tonight’s premiere of Everybody Hates Chris. In the Post, Chip Crews quotes it thusly: That’s 49 cent of spilt milk dripping all over my table. Somebody gonna drink this milk! Then, the infamously inaccurate Alessandra Stanley quotes [...]
