Oh, I totally forgot to mention last night’s Queer Eye! (One of these days I will get around to telling what a fantastic show this is, possibly the best makeover show on television.) Tuesday night, the boys ended up babysitting two-year-old quintuplets and Amy Sedaris made a cameo appearance. She brought over cupcakes. Awesome!
More movies, good and bad
A little debate is continuing between myself and film genius Dan Dorman down in the comments sections of a post from yesterday. Dan proposes an interesting question: “What are some truly crappy movies that you love anyway?” His list is: Ishtar (1987) Waterworld (1995) The Bodyguard (1992) Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith [...]
Painting by numbers
This is kind of cool: the artist Coop is blogging the creation of a new painting (via BoingBoing).
“Hey Sister, Go Sister, Soul Sister, Go Sister…”
We’ve been breeding Internet celebrities in this country for a long time. Remember JenniCam and the Star Wars Kid? Andy Milonakis got his own damn show. But that’s the wicked capitalist West. What about China? Do the Chinese long for the global infamy that the Web can deliver? Apparently yes. Shi Hengxia, a 28-year-old peasant [...]
Let’s agree to disagree.
Over at About Last Night, Our Girl in Chicago issued a challenge: What are the popular, supposedly good, movies that you nevertheless hate? The results are here, and some of them are predictable. Even though I liked American Beauty and loved Lost in Translation, I understand their flaws and I’m not going to put up [...]
“Such grace, oh such beauty…”
A few years ago, This American Life did a live tour. Throughout the show, the band OK Go performed. At one point, they did a boy band parody lip-synch performance of their song “C-C-C-Cinnamon Lips” that was absolutely hilarious, one of the highlights of the whole show. They’ve worked up a new dance routine for [...]
“She went away for the holidays…”
BabyBorderline, down in Bueno Aires, has blogged about the new Sebastián Rubín EP, which you can download for free. (Go here, then to albums, then look for Rubín – Componé Ladrón!, or just go here, for the index.) Of special note is the song “La triple a se llevó a mi mujer,” which is the [...]
“How sweet the sound.”
Some things have to be seen to be believed. You need to see the site of K&K Mime, “identical twins [who] silently interpret contemporary Gospel music with dramatic gestures and animated facial expressions, portraying man’s resistance of life’s evil temptations and His transformation from doubter to believer.” They are the “founders of Gospel mime,” and [...]
“…from Brazil — where the nuts come from.”
We’ll finish up this week’s music travelogue in Brazil. Caetano Veloso is one of the leading figures in Brazilian music. Along with such people as Gilberto Gil, Gal Costa and Chico Buarque, he more or less invented contemporary Brazilian music. Since the electronica community has robbed freely from Brazil, it’s only fair that Veloso cops [...]
What’s with this mishegoss?
In today’s New York Times, Joyce Wadler interviews Ricky Gervais about his new series Extras. The story starts thusly: “I’ve always been fascinated with actors who have to be heroes, whereas I shy away from that,” Ricky Gervais, the British comedian who will star in a new HBO series, “Extras,” this fall, was saying the [...]
